Awakening in a bleak landscape as scarred as her body, Cass Dollar vaguely recalls surviving something terrible. Having no idea how many weeks have passed, she slowly realizes the horrifying truth: Ruthie has vanished. And with her, nearly all of civilization. Where once-lush hills carried cars and commerce, the roads today see only cannibalistic Beaterspeople turned hungry for human flesh by a government experiment gone wrong.
Why I loved this book? Many reasons. I thought Cass and Smoke (the sort of love interest) were excellent characters. Cass isn't perfect but she is trying to do better. She has done some pretty selfish things in her life and continues to do so throughout this book. The reasons behind the book selfishness is pretty reasonable to me. She is trying to get to her daughter at any cost. Although I'm not a mother, in a way I do understand wanting to find and care for a child at any cost (especially when there are hordes of zombies – also known as beaters in this book – shambling around). She was flawed and I found that added to her believability.
