I've eagerly awaited this chapter of Ms. James' "
Desperate Duchesses" series. Although, there may have been some times during the story where I thought things were resolved a little too easily (i.e., Villers' sudden disinterest in
Jemma;
Elijah's heart), I was engrossed and captivated by the overall tale and was able to over look a few uses of the
deus ex machina. I thought Ms. James handled the final
chess match between Jemma and Elijah brilliantly; it certainly was a highlight of the novel. There only were two areas where I had somewhat of an issue. One was with the character of Louise, the marquise. I
felt she was a little too over the top. I understand that she was there to be a foil for Jemma, but it seemed like padding the story. Also, the character (and use of) Leopold Villiers was a tad staid.
