William King has done a superb job with the Ragnar series. The characters in the books are well thought out and each show their own personality. King really works hard to bring sense to the Space Wolves and the Adeptus Astartes. Other authors would just show space marines as mindless killing machines, but some authors like King really show the inner working of the Marines and that like all of us even though they have been indoctrinated into the life of a warrior they each have a complex inner dialogue and feeling.

The book itself was ok - I really liked the interaction between Ragnar and Sven, but damn, the ending just came up and hit you. It was like someone told him to stop the book at page 288 and when he hit it, he just ended the book. The whole premise to the story is "how did Ragnar become a wolflord without first becoming a Grey Hunter." Did he tell you this? No. There was a fairly lame plot device (like you'd see in a RPG) to get some action in, but there was little to none plot resolution at the end. I was really hoping King would improve on his endings from his Gotrek and Felix stories, but in fact, he's getting worse. If you liked the first two books, you'll probably like this one, but I cannot highly recommend it.

Space Wolf chronicles the rise of Ragnar Blackmane. From a young member of a small islander tribe of Fenris to the glory of an ultimate warrior of the Emperium, this is a tale growing and learning. While it lacks on the 'epic' feel of most WH40K books I've read, and it is very predictable at times, this is still a fun and interesting book. The amount of background material for the Space Wolf chapter of space marines is awesome for anyone interesting in learning about them. Because Ragnar is devoid of any knowledge about the universe and proceeds to learn and observe, this book is excellent for anyone looking for a introductory book to the WH40K world. The brutal training of the Space Wolves gives you a good idea of why space marines are so powerful and able to take on such overwhelming odds.
